It's so wonderful to be home! The care and attention we got at Hopewell was above and beyond, but there's nothing like being in your own place. Erik is comfortable here, and his roommates came over last night to help us celebrate, so it's the best of both worlds.
The hospice team delivered all his equipment on Saturday, and Sunday's transition was reasonably painless, though it was a long day. We finished it up with a visit from the weekend hospice nurse to go over everything with us. He's on a ton of medication, and the schedule is daunting, but we got it all figured out. A restless night last night then a long visit from the nurse and social worker on his team today, made for another long day, but they helped us a lot and we feel like we really know what's going on now. We're so happy for their support.
As you might imagine, Erik is pretty tired. Nights are tough. Talking is often really hard, breathing takes a bit more effort, and the cough keeps getting worse, but they're working on ways to calm it, and most of his other symptoms are being managed really well. His energy was pretty low this morning, but he was up this afternoon and walking around the house with only one crutch, and in his room without one at all! We're so grateful for the hospice team's work to keep him so comfortable.
I'll try to keep you updated every week or so, or if anything out of the ordinary happens. I can't tell you how much it means to us that you're all there - thank you for everything!
